One of the most underrated aspects of Madrid is the proximity to hikes in the nearby mountains. I think this slips by most foreigners because most people do not travel to Spain for the outdoor activities, especially in Madrid. However, there is an extensive network of trails that are relatively easy to access. This hike was about 7.5 km and wound through a beautiful grove of oaks before giving way to an open plateau. We enjoyed some bird watching and the views from above.
